This represents his second appearance in the series (after Castlevania III: Draculas Curse) and the first time a non-Belmont took the main role in a Castlevania game. Move lists are slimmed-down and re-adjusted in order to coincide with the new beat em' up gameplay. Alucard is the main protagonist of the game Castlevania: Symphony of the Night. Enemies drop health or tension boosts, extra lives or point items. The Tension Gauge is again used for Overdrive attacks, while the Burst Gauge, when filled, allows unlimited Overdrive attacks until it depletes, or the use of the aforementioned Psych Burst attack. There is also a Back Attack and a Psych Burst Recovery that covers a large range and recovers health if enemies are hit. Instead of the series' essential Punch, Kick, Slash and Heavy Slash buttons, there are Light, Medium, Heavy Attack and Jump buttons, respectively. Core gameplay consists of defeating large amounts of enemies and bosses across eighteen levels, while completing each character's story, which are presented in short conversations between chapters.
